How Blockchain Is Making Humanitarian Cash Transfers Faster and Safer

The UNHCR pioneered a blockchain-based pilot project in Ukraine to address inefficiencies in humanitarian cash transfers. By partnering with the Stellar Development Foundation, the initiative implemented digital cash distributed directly to internally displaced people, regardless of location. This approach leverages blockchain’s transparent and secure nature, utilizing stablecoins like Circle’s USD Coin to mitigate volatility concerns. Over $1.1 million was distributed to 1,500 people in the first year, with no need for bank accounts, highlighting blockchain’s potential for secure, real-time global transactions. A digital hub has been established in Geneva to further develop such solutions, aiming to enhance financial inclusion and streamline aid processes worldwide.
